The ultimate goal of this project is to commemorate 1.5 million Jews perished in Holocaust in Ukraine
Pre-war Ukraine had the largest Jewish population in the Soviet Union and the second in the World. Ukraine had common border with countries occupied by Germany and its allies. Therefore, it is no accident that Ukraine occupied second place in the world, after Poland, by the number of Holocaust victims, first place by number of Holocaust by Bullets victims and by number of Holocaust killing sites.
The exact number of these sites is yet to be determined, but we now know of more than 1000+ registered sites in Ukraine and there were many hundreds of such mass murder sites known only to local residents. Yahad-In Unum documented 916 killing sites in Ukraine. |
Objectives
We are living in data-based driving digital word, and data visibility is important factor for processing information. A map is a very convenient visual interface for accessing information.
The Map of Holocaust Killing Sites in Ukraine intends to visualize killing sites data and to provide visual perspective on the scope and scale of the Nazi programs to kill Jews. This understanding leads to the development of inferences on how the events of those days are still with us as the world continues to battle against nativist forces that see the rise of anti-Semitic behavior.
TKF Interactive Map will became a valuable tool for Holocaust studies at schools and colleges. The Map’s visual character, preferred by young generation, will help to engage students in Holocaust study. TKF Interactive Map platform will help also individuals and organizations doing Holocaust research. It creates one stop source of comprehensive information about Holocaust killing sites in Ukraine.
